Washing Machine Maintenance Tips

No other kitchen appliance generates as much kinetic energy as our washing machines, so it’s unsurprising that they require a great deal of maintenance to keep them in tip-top condition.

If you’re wondering how you can extend the life of your washing machine, here are five simple checks that you can carry out.

Soap dispenser and filter

Ensuring that these elements of your washing machine are checked regularly will help guard against any funny smells. 

Check your soap dispenser for any dirt or grime. If you find mould, you can remove the tray altogether and soak it a solution of bleach and water. Once rinsed, use a strong brush or even an old toothbrush to remove any stubborn stains. 

We would also recommend that you check your filter. We’re all guilty of leaving things in our trouser pockets when we wash our clothes, so make sure there are no strange items that need removing. 

Seals

The seals on our washing machine doors provide essential defense against leaks, so if yours have a tear, you have a problem. 

Start with a visual check; you should be able to spot any damage by simply looking for it. However, if you want to be extra thorough, you can run your finger around the inside of the seal to feel for any smaller tears.

Hinges

Your washing machine’s seals aren’t the only thing protecting your kitchen from leaks, you also need to make sure that your hinges are aligned properly. Open and close the door a couple of times, being sure to check that it closes correctly and whether it looks level. If not, your hinges might need to be repaired.

Wash cycles

If we only ever use one wash cycle, our washing machines might be faulty without us knowing. To test that your washing machine is fully functional then, simply do some test washes using cycles that you wouldn’t normally use. For example, if you normally wash at low temperature, you could try a high-temperature wash. Performing this particular test wash has a secondary benefit in that it will flush any dirt or grime out of your drum.

Bearings

You might not have seen the bearings in your washing machine, you might not even know what they are, but they play a vital role in ensuring a smooth cycle. To test that the concrete weight hasn’t come free, give the drum a spin and check for noises or resistance. If you hear a scraping sound or the drum was difficult to move, there could well be a problem.
