Maisonette gutted by electrical fire

A maisonette in London was completely destroyed by fire last week after an electric blanket overheated, prompting firefighters to issue a safety reminder.

The Kensington & Chelsea Chronicle reports that the property in Knightsbridge was gutted by the blaze last Thursday, with neighbouring flats also damaged. While no-one was injured, four fire crews from nearby stations were despatched to tackle the fire.

“We believe the fire was caused by an overheated electric blanket. It is very important to make sure that electrical items, like electric blankets, are switched off when you leave the house,” said a spokesman for London Fire Brigade. “Electric blankets shouldn't be left on overnight either.”

The fire brigade has published a series of guidelines on the appropriate use of electric blankets on its website. Householders are advised to ensure that blankets are tested at least once every three years to ensure they are in full working order, and that damaged blankets should be replaced.

Last month, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service urged householders to check electric appliances are switched off before going to bed.
