Gas fitter hit with fine

A gas engineer from Berkshire has been ordered to pay a fine after being convicted of carrying out work he was not registered to do.

Philip Payne was fined £1,300 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs by Reading Magistrates’ Court last week. The court heard that he carried out work in the kitchen of a local pub in 2009, despite not being accredited by Gas Safe Register to work on commercial catering appliances.

Although Mr Payne was registered to perform domestic gas jobs, another engineer later discovered that the work in question had not been carried out to the relevant standard. Fitters are required to be signed up with Gas Safe Register before completing gas installation or maintenance work.

“An engineer who is Gas Safe Registered for commercial catering work would have the necessary training to carry out this installation correctly. While the installation was not immediately dangerous, the failures meant that it could become unsafe if faults developed,” said Health and Safety Executive inspector Ray Kelly.

A Gloucestershire gas fitter was convicted by magistrates earlier this month of carrying out gas work after deceiving customers into thinking he was Gas Safe registered.
