Eight design students from around the world have made it through to the final of the 2011 Electrolux Design Lab competition.
The judges announced their 25 semi-finalists in the middle of June after receiving 1,300 applications earlier this year. There are now just eight people left in the competition.
Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux asked the applicants to come up with a product that would fit with the theme 'intelligent mobility'. Designs that have made it to the final judging stage include a portable microwave oven, a portable washing machine, a bagel toaster you can take to work and an all-in-one hot plate.
According to a report by Appliance Magazine.com, the winner of the competition will be announced at the Room Home Intelligence conference, which takes place at the Business Design Centre in London on September 7. The event is based around trend prediction and future consumer behavioural insight.
Neil Gannon, head of marketing expertise at Electrolux, said: "To take the innovative Electrolux Design Lab finals to Room, where we can introduce emerging design talent, is a natural step for this pioneering Electrolux project.
"The marriage of stylish design, cutting edge technology and the response to global future trends are synonymous with Electrolux and has helped shape the success of the group for the past 92 years. Consumer insight and innovation form a staple consideration in our current product portfolio and it will be a pleasure to share our expertise on this stage."
