MoD in gas safety probe
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is at the centre of a row over gas safety, after it was revealed that hundreds of military families were living in homes without valid gas safety certificates.
According to the Sunday Times, a Freedom of Information Act request found that 642 homes were being rented out to military personnel and their families despite having not undergone a gas safety check within the last year.
The request revealed that an additional 991 empty MoD properties also lacked valid certificates.
Landlords are legally obliged to arrange annual gas appliance checks at their rental properties. Those who fail to do so run the risk of being hit with an unlimited fine or a two-year prison sentence.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed that it will conduct an investigation into the MoD's handling of gas safety matters.
