Millions 'not getting gas safety checks'
Millions of people in the UK are risking their health as well as their finances by not getting their gas appliances checked regularly, it has been claimed.
According to Gas Safe Register, more than 5.5 million people across the country are failing to ensure that their gas appliances are checked over at least once a year by a registered engineer. A survey of engineers found that these checks cost an average of only £60.
"With the average cost of safety checking your gas boiler at just £60, it’s a small price to pay to keep you and your family safe and prevent damage to your home," said Gas Safe Register chief executive Jonathan Samuel.
"Millions are still taking risks so we’re reminding people to make sure all their gas appliances are safety checked every year," he added.
The study also found that one in four West Midlands homes had unsafe gas appliances - the highest proportion in the UK. By contrast, one in nine were unsafe in the East Midlands, which had the lowest proportion.
