Richard, 23, of Great Lumley, Chester le St, has just invested in a 0800 Repair franchise. The firm specialises in fixing household goods such as washing machines, cookers and tumble driers, and its vans can be easily recognised by the distinctive 7ft screwdriver on the top.
His father Grant Melvin set up his appliance repair business two years ago when he decided to set up a franchise for the Newcastle area. His son was so impressed by his dad’s business success that he decided to give it a go too.
Richard has worked for the appliance repair industry since he left school at 17 and was formerly an appliance engineer for Comet. But he had always dreamed of running his own business and inspired by his dad Grant, decided to buy a franchise covering the Sunderland, Washington, South Shields and Gateshead area.
Grant said: “Richard was looking for a new direction and was so impressed by my success that I persuaded him to follow in my footsteps. He has always wanted to be his own boss and is really excited about it and I will be here to give his guidance and support – he will be a great addition to the 0800 Repair team.
Richard added: “I’ve just completed my training with the firm and have taken delivery of my van and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve always dreamed of running my own business and after working as an employee for the past four years - the time was right to take on a new challenge.
“I’m really going to enjoy the many benefits that self-employment brings - particularly the flexible hours and the opportunity to be in control of my own destiny. Also, I relish the challenge of making the business successful which will secure my long term future”.
